初到雲門。門曰。雪峰和尚道。開却門達磨來也。語具雲門章中住後。更不作法嗣書。祇將三轉語上雲門。僧問。如何是道。師曰。明眼人落井。保寧頌。秋夜霜天月正明。仰觀星象約三更。一條大路平如掌。歸去何妨徹曉行問。如何是吹毛劍。師曰。珊瑚枝枝撐著月。雪竇頌。要平不平。大巧若拙。或指或掌。倚天照雪。大冶兮磨礱不下。良工兮拂拭未歇。別別。珊瑚枝枝撐著月問。如何是提婆宗。師曰。銀盌裏盛雪。雪竇頌。老新開。端的別。解道銀盌裏盛雪。九十六個應自知。不知却問天邊月。提婆宗提婆宗。赤旛之下起清風雲門見曰。他後老僧忌日。祇消舉此三轉語。足以報恩　問僧。遊山來。為佛法來。曰清平世界。說甚麼佛法。師曰。好個無事禪客。曰早是多事了也。師曰。上座去年在此過夏了。曰不曾。師曰。與麼則先來不相識。下去。

> <note>Upon first arriving at Yunmen, Yunmen said, "Xuefeng said, 'Open the gate, Bodhidharma is coming.' The full account is in the Yunmen chapter."</note>Later, when the master settled there, he did not send a formal succession letter. Instead, he took three turning phrases to Yunmen. A monk asked, "What is the Path?" The master said, "A person with clear eyes falls into a well." <note>Baoning's verse: Autumn night, frosty sky, the moon shining bright; Gazing at stars, about the third watch. A great road lies flat as the palm of a hand—Why not travel it till dawn?</note> A monk asked, "What is the sword that shaves off a hair?" The master said, "Coral branches hold up the moon." <note>Xuedou's verse: To level what is unlevel—great skill appears clumsy. Whether pointing or striking, it leans against heaven and shines on snow. The great furnace cannot refine it; the master craftsman cannot stop polishing it. Distinct, distinct—coral branches hold up the moon.</note> A monk asked, "What is the school of Deva?" The master said, "Snow heaped in a silver bowl." <note>Xuedou's verse: Old Xinkai spoke truly distinctly, able to say 'snow in a silver bowl.' The ninety-six should know for themselves; if not, ask the moon beyond the sky. The School of Deva, the School of Deva—beneath the red banner arises a pure breeze.</note> When Yunmen saw this, he said, "Later, on the anniversary of my death, just bring up these three turning phrases—that will be enough to repay kindness." A monk came, and the master asked, "Have you come wandering the mountains, or have you come for the Dharma?" The monk said, "In a world of peace and clarity, what talk of the Dharma?" The master said, "A fine meditation monk with nothing to do." The monk said, "Already, this is too much." The master said, "Venerable, did you stay here last summer?" The monk said, "No." The master said, "Then we haven't met before. Go down."
