> Master Ruixian of Cishi Temple, Shaoxing Prefecture

> He practiced the precepts, observing that the nature of the precepts was like empty space—those who clung to them were lost in delusion. His teacher said, "The precepts are a method to restrain the body; why bind yourself with them?" So he delved into the teachings of the Tiantai school. He read, "All dharmas do not arise from themselves, nor do they arise from others, nor from both, nor without a cause; therefore, they are said to be unarisen." Puzzled, he thought, "If they do not arise from self, other, both, or without a cause, then from what do they ultimately arise?" He then realized, "Conditioned arising—the three contemplations of emptiness, provisional existence, and the middle. Praising and guiding the nature of the sea of reality, the mind, Buddhas, and sentient beings share different names but the same essence. The ten realms and ten vehicles transform consciousness into wisdom. The inconceivable realm, illuminated by wisdom, is beyond the reach of words." He abandoned the study of doctrines and visited various masters. Later, at Touzi, he met Guangjian, who asked, "Where is your hometown?" The master replied, "East of the Yue region in Liangzhe." Guangjian asked, "What is the state of affairs in East Yue?" The master said, "Qinwang Peak is high; the Jinghu Lake is wide." Guangjian asked, "Is Qinwang Peak the same as or different from yourself?" The master replied, "Sanskrit from the West, Tang speech from this land." Guangjian said, "This is still just temple-bred rhetoric. Ultimately, are they the same or different?" The master shouted. Guangjian then struck him. The master said, "Your kindness is too great to repay." He then bowed in gratitude.
