> He was a native of Central India. Having transmitted the Dharma, he journeyed northward to propagate the teachings, arriving in the kingdom of Northern India. There he beheld golden auspicious clouds above the city battlements and sighed, saying, "This is the aura of a person of the Way. Surely there is a great being who will be my successor." He then entered the city. Amidst the bustling marketplace, a man holding a wine vessel approached him and asked, "Master, from whence have you come, and where do you intend to go?" The Patriarch replied, "I come from within my own mind, and I go toward nowhere." The man asked, "Do you recognize what is in my hand?" The Patriarch said, "This is a vessel of defilement, yet one that carries purity." The man said, "Do you recognize me?" The Patriarch replied, "If I recognize you, that is not me; if I am me, I do not recognize you." He then said to the man, "Try stating your name, and I shall later reveal your fundamental cause." The man answered with a verse: "From countless kalpas past, Until born in this land, My original clan is Parāśara, My name is Vasumitra." The Patriarch said, "My teacher, Dhītika, said that the World-Honored One once traveled in Northern India and told Ānanda, 'In this kingdom, three hundred years after my parinirvāṇa, there will be a sage of the Parāśara clan named Vasumitra, who among the Patriarchs of Chan will attain the seventh place.' The World-Honored One prophesied about you. You should leave home." The man then set down his vessel, paid homage to the master, and standing to one side said, "I recall a past kalpa when I once acted as a dānapati and offered a precious seat to a Tathāgata. That Buddha prophesied to me, saying, 'In the Worthy Kalpa, during the Dharma of Śākyamuni, you will propagate the supreme teaching.' Now your words correspond to this. I pray you will liberate and guide me." The Patriarch immediately shaved his head and conferred the full precepts. Then he declared to him, "The treasury of the true Dharma eye I now entrust to you. Do not allow it to be cut off." He then spoke a verse: "When mind is absent, nothing can be attained; What is spoken and attained is not called Dharma. If one realizes mind is not mind, Then one begins to understand the mind Dharma." After speaking this verse, the Patriarch entered the samādhi of the lion's fearless leap, soared into empty space to a height of seven tāla trees, then returned to his seat. Transforming fire, he cremated himself. Vasumitra collected the sacred relics, stored them in a seven-jeweled casket, and built a stūpa, placing it atop. This occurred in the seventeenth year of King Xiang, the jia-shen year.
