> In the early years of the Zhenyuan era of the Tang Dynasty, the Master resided at the Baidao Monastery and later lived at Wuxie. A monk asked, "What is greater than heaven and earth?" The Master replied, "No one can recognize it." The monk asked, "Can it be carved or shaped?" The Master said, "Try your hand at it." The monk asked, "In this gate, what is the matter of beginning and end?" The Master replied, "You tell me, how long has what is before you been in the making?" The monk said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "There is nothing here for you to ask about." The monk said, "Does the Master not have a way to receive people?" The Master said, "When you come seeking to be received, then I will receive you." The monk said, "Please, Master, receive me." The Master said, "What is it you lack?" The monk asked, "How can one become without mind?" The Master replied, "Toppling mountains and overturning seas, still and calm. When the earth shakes, sleep peacefully—who pays it any mind?" On the twenty-third day of the third month in the thirteenth year of the Yuanhe era, the Master bathed, burned incense, and sat upright. He told the assembly, "The Dharmakaya is perfectly still, yet appears to come and go. All sages share the same source, and all beings return to one. Now my bubble has burst—why should sorrow arise? Do not exhaust your spirits, but hold to right mindfulness. If you follow this command, you truly repay my kindness. If you stubbornly go against these words, you are not my children." At that time, a monk asked, "Where is the Master going?" The Master said, "Nowhere." The monk said, "Why do I not see it?" The Master said, "It is not something the eyes can perceive."<note>Dongshan said, "A master of the craft."</note> With these words, he passed away peacefully.
