> Master Ruhui of Eastern Temple in Hunan

> Born in Qujiang, Shixing. He first paid respects at Jingshan, then later studied under Daji. With so many students, the beds and couches in the monks' hall collapsed under their weight, earning him the nickname "Hui of the Collapsed Beds." After Daji passed away, the master often worried that his followers kept reciting the saying "The mind is Buddha" without true understanding. He would say, "Where does Buddha dwell, that you speak of 'the mind'? The mind is like a painter, yet you say it is Buddha." Thus he told the assembly, "The mind is not Buddha; wisdom is not the Path. The sword has gone far; you are only marking the boat where it fell." At the time, he was known as the "Chan Cave" of Dongsi. Minister Cui Qun, when appointed as the inspector of Hunan, visited the master and asked, "What have you attained, Master?" The master replied, "I have attained by seeing my true nature." The master happened to be suffering from an eye ailment, and the minister teased him, "Since you say you've seen your nature, what about your eyes?" The master answered, "Seeing true nature is not a matter of the eyes; what harm does an eye ailment do?" The minister bowed in gratitude. \[Fayan added, "It is the minister's eyes."\] The minister saw birds dropping feces on a Buddha statue and asked, "Do birds have Buddha-nature?" The master said, "Yes." The minister asked, "Then why do they drop feces on the Buddha's head?" The master said, "Why don't they drop it on the hawk's head instead?" Yangshan came to pay respects. The master asked, "Where are you from?" Yangshan said, "From Guangnan." The master said, "I've heard that there is a luminous pearl of the South Sea in Guangnan. Is that so?" Yangshan said, "Yes." The master asked, "What is this pearl like?" Yangshan said, "It is hidden during the dark moon and appears during the bright moon." The master said, "Have you brought it with you?" Yangshan said, "I have." The master said, "Why not show it to me?" Yangshan, with his hands cupped, stepped forward and said, "Yesterday, when I arrived at Weishan, he also demanded this pearl, and I had no words to reply, no reason to present." The master said, "A true lion's cub, skilled in roaring." Yangshan bowed, then went back to the guest quarters, composed himself, and returned to pay respects again. The master, seeing him, said, "We have already met." Yangshan said, "This meeting—was it not proper?" The master returned to his quarters and closed the door. Yangshan went back and recounted the incident to Weishan. Weishan said, "What kind of mind is Ziji (the master) showing?" Yangshan said, "If not for that, how could I truly know him?" Later, someone asked the master, "May I invite you, Master, to open a lecture hall?" The master said, "Wait until the stone is wrapped and warm, then yes." The person had no response. \[Yaoshan added, "The stone is warm."\] In the Tang dynasty, during the year Guimao of Changqing, the master passed away. He was posthumously given the title Great Master Chuanming.
