> Master Tanzang of the Western Garden Hermitage on Mount Nan

> Having received the mind seal from Great Stillness, he later visited Shitou and became utterly clear and enlightened. He then left to reside at West Garden, where the community of practitioners grew daily. One day, while the master was heating the bathwater himself, a monk asked, "Why not have the novices do this?" The master clapped his hands three times. <note>A monk mentioned this to Caoshan, who said, "They are all cases of clapping hands, but in this, West Garden is extraordinary. The one-finger Zen of Juzhi is because his understanding was not precise." The monk then asked Caoshan, "Was West Garden's clapping not a matter on the level of servants and maids?" Caoshan said, "Yes." The monk said, "Is there anything further beyond that?" Caoshan said, "There is." The monk said, "What is the matter beyond that?" Caoshan scolded, "You servant, you maid!"</note> The master kept a dog. Often, when he walked at night, the dog would take hold of his robe, and the master would return to his quarters. The dog also often lay in wait by the gate. Then one night, it barked repeatedly and lunged with formidable force, as if attacking something. At dawn, in the eastern kitchen, there was a huge python, several tens of feet long, with its mouth open and breath hissing, its venomous aura blazing fiercely. An attendant asked the master to avoid it. The master said, "Can death be fled? It comes with poison; I receive it with compassion. Poison has no true nature—only when provoked does it become strong. If compassion is without conditions, enemies and kin are one and the same." After he spoke, the python lowered its head and slowly moved away, vanishing in an instant. On another night, a group of bandits came. Again the dog took hold of his robe. The master said to the bandits, "Whatever in this humble hut is of use to you, take it freely. I have no attachment to any of it." Moved by his words, the bandits all bowed their heads and dispersed.
