> Monk Mi Ling

僧問。如何是衲衣下事。師曰。醜陋任君嫌。不挂雲霞色。師將示滅。遺偈曰。祖祖不思議。不許常住世。大眾審思惟。畢竟祇這是。言訖而寂。

> A monk asked, "What is the matter beneath the monk's robe?" The master replied, "Ugly as it is, let others despise it; it does not adorn itself with the colors of clouds and rosy clouds." As the master was about to pass into cessation, he left a verse: "Ancestors and patriarchs, inconceivable, Yet they do not permit dwelling forever in this world. O assembly, ponder this carefully— In the end, this is all it is." Having spoken, he became still.
