> A monk from Silla came to pay his respects. As he was spreading his sitting mat, about to bow, the master grabbed him and said, "Before you left your home country, say one phrase." The monk was silent. The master pushed him out and said, "I asked him for one phrase, and he gave me two." Another monk came to pay respects and spread his sitting mat. The master said, "If you understand it here, you've wasted your whole life." The monk asked, "If I don't understand it here, then what?" The master said, "If you don't understand it here, then where else would you understand it?" He then struck him and drove him out. Another monk came to pay respects. Just as he spread his mat, the master said, "No need for pleasantries. Give me the principle from before patterns ever appeared." The monk said, "I have a mouth, but if it's silenced, that's fine. Why desperately hunt for a fan in the twelfth lunar month?" The master raised his staff as if to strike. The monk grabbed it and said, "Give me the principle from before you raised the staff." The master said, "Those who follow me wander north and south. Those who don't follow me die standing still in the east and west." The monk said, "Following or not, set that aside. Please, master, point out east, west, south, and north." The master struck him. When Master Piyun arrived and entered the abbot's quarters, the master asked, "Before you saw the old man of Dongyue, how did you work with living beings?" Piyun said, "I only see clouds rising over green peaks. How would I know the moon sets in a cold pond?" The master said, "Just that alone is hard to come by." Piyun said, "Could this be what it's like before seeing him?" The master shouted. Piyun spread both hands. The master said, "There's no end to those who wrongly blame others." Piyun covered his ears and left. The master said, "That man's whole life is dead." Master Luoping came to pay respects. The master asked, "Where do you come from?" Luoping said, "South Creek." The master asked, "Have you brought news from South Creek?" Luoping said, "What dissolves has dissolved. What rests has not yet rested." The master said, "What's most bitter is what has not yet rested." Luoping said, "Tell me, what is it that hasn't rested?" The master said, "One meeting face to face, a thousand years forgetting the name." Luoping flicked his sleeve and left. The master said, "There's no end to those who play with dead snakes." A monk came to pay respects and was about to bow. The master said, "You wild fox, what did you see that makes you bow?" The monk said, "You old bald donkey, what did you see that makes you ask such a question?" The master said, "How bitter! How bitter! Today Xiantian forgets what's before and loses what's after." The monk said, "But what's gained, in the end, never makes up for what's lost." The master said, "How could it not be so?" The monk said, "Who would be content with that?" The master laughed heartily and said, "Far, far away." The monk looked around and left.
