> A man from Goryeo. He wandered through Min and Yue, and climbed the hall of Xuefeng, secretly aligning with the profound meaning. He wore only a single robe and served diligently in all tasks. People in Min called him "Zhao Bu Na." One evening, pointing at the half moon, he asked Elder Pu, "Where has that piece gone?" Pu said, "Don't give rise to delusions." The master said, "A piece has been lost." Though all admired this, he remained calm and self-possessed. He first resided at Mount Qiyun in Wuzhou. Ascending the hall, he was silent for a long while, then suddenly stretched out his hand and looked at the assembly, saying, "Beg a little, beg a little." Again he said, "One person spreads falsehood; ten thousand people spread it as truth." A monk asked, "The grass boy can sing and dance—are there still such ones now?" The master descended from his seat and danced, saying, "Little novice, do you understand?" The monk said, "I don't understand." The master said, "This mountain monk steps the tune, and you still don't get it." A monk asked, "One pill of elixir can turn iron into gold; one phrase of ultimate truth can turn the ordinary into a sage. Please, master, point this out." The master said, "Do you know that Qiyun turns gold into iron?" The monk said, "Turning gold into iron—I've never heard of this before. As for the phrase of ultimate truth, I dare hope you'll reveal it." The master said, "If you don't grasp it at the sentence, regret will be hard to chase." Later, he moved to Jingqing Temple in Yuezhou. Ascending the hall, he said, "Today I'll make full use of the order." At that time a monk came forward and said, "Please, master, use the order fully." The master then shouted, "Hum! Hum!" A monk asked, "What is the fundamental matter for a student?" The master said, "Jingqing does not begrudge words." A monk said, "Please, master, carve and polish me." The master said, "Eighty percent done." The monk said, "Why not a hundred percent?" The master said, "Do you know that Jingqing repairs things while they're still living?" He asked a monk, "Where do you come from?" The monk said, "From Wufeng." The master said, "What did you come here for?" The monk said, "To pay respects to the master." The master said, "Why not pay respects to yourself?" The monk said, "I've already paid respects." The master said, "The water of Jinghu Lake is shallow." A monk asked, "What is the first statement?" The master said, "Don't misplace your words and names." The monk said, "Is there no skillful means?" The master said, "A black-headed bird raises its young." A monk asked, "The path going upward—even a thousand sages cannot transmit it. Who, then, can transmit it?" The master said, "Even a thousand sages doubt me." The monk said, "Is this not the transmission?" The master said, "Emperor Jin beheaded Xi Kang." A monk asked about Shakyamuni closing his room at Magadha and Vimalakirti silencing his mouth at Vaishali—what does this mean? The master said, "Under the east corridor, in twos and threes." Ascending the hall, he said, "All places take the Dharmakaya of Vairocana as the ultimate standard. Here at Jingqing, it's not like that. You must know that Vairocana has a teacher and the Dharmakaya has a master." A monk asked, "What is Vairocana's teacher and the Dharmakaya's master?" The master said, "How dare those two gentlemen discuss this?" A monk asked, "The ancients said, 'Seeing form, one sees the mind.' This is form—which one is the mind?" The master said, "Asking like that—are you trying to deceive this mountain monk?" A monk said, "Before it's cut open, please, master, decide." The master said, "Where does it fall?" The monk said, "Once words slip out, they cannot be taken back." The master said, "This is also Hanshan sending off Shide." The monk bowed. The master said, "Stop, stop. The teacher of the Dharma has slipped in words, and this mountain monk has slipped too." The monk said, "A fierce tiger does not eat its own cub." The master said, "A donkey's head comes out; a horse's head comes back." The master suddenly asked a monk, "Do you remember?" The monk said, "I remember." The master said, "What did you say?" The monk said, "What did you say?" The master said, "A boy from Huainan enters the temple." A monk asked, "What is it that even the swiftest eagle or falcon cannot catch up with?" The master said, "If the teacher of the Dharma asks another question, this mountain monk will answer differently." The monk said, "Please, master, answer differently." The master said, "A traveler of ten li still has one stage to go." A monk asked, "Though gold dust is precious, when it cannot be put in the eye, what then?" The master said, "It cannot be put in—can it still be put in?" The monk bowed. The master said, "The Shensha deity." A monk asked, "Beneath the Bodhi tree, beings are saved. What is the Bodhi tree?" The master said, "It's quite like the neem tree." The monk said, "Why is it like the neem tree?" The master said, "It's not a fine horse—why bother with the whip's shadow?" In the year Dingwei of the Later Jin, he entered nirvana. His stupa was erected at Daci Mountain in Hangzhou.
