> Hangzhou Jingshan Hongyin Chan Master

> He was from Wuxing. A monk asked, "What is it like when one's breath is stilled and one is like ashes?" The Master said, "That is still the doing of someone bound to time." The monk asked, "What about after the doing?" The Master said, "A farmer tills the field but does not plant." The monk asked, "What ultimately?" The Master said, "The grain ripens but is not brought to the threshing floor." Someone asked, "What about one who passes through the Dragon Gate without relying on the force of wind and thunder?" The Master said, "That is still first rank or second rank." The monk said, "Since this is still a matter of stages, what about what lies beyond?" The Master said, "I know nothing of your Dragon Gate." Someone asked, "What about when it is like frost, like snow?" The Master said, "That is still defilement." The monk asked, "What about when there is no defilement?" The Master said, "Not the same color." The Elder Quanming of Xuzhou first asked Shishuang, "What is it like when a single hair pierces through all the holes?" Shuang said, "You must go for ten thousand years." The monk asked, "What about after ten thousand years?" Shuang said, "Passing the exam is yours to pass; failing is yours to fail." Later he asked the Master, "What is it like when a single hair pierces through all the holes?" The Master said, "Shining your boots is yours to shine; bearing fruit is yours to bear." Someone asked, "What is long?" The Master said, "A thousand sages cannot measure it." The monk asked, "What is short?" The Master said, "It cannot fill the eye of a tiny gnat." The monk was not convinced and went off to report this to Shishuang. Shuang said, "It is simply because it is too close to the truth." The monk then asked Shuang, "What is long?" Shuang said, "It does not bend." The monk asked, "What is short?" Shuang said, "On the backgammon board, no one cheers." The Elder Fori came to visit the Master. The Master asked, "I understand you alone teach and transform your region. How do you recommend touring the summit of the peak?" Fori said, "The bright moon hangs in the empty sky; ice and frost do not feel cold themselves." The Master said, "Is that not also your family style?" Fori said, "Sheer cliffs stand through ten thousand gates; within them lies a jeweled moon." The Master said, "That is still words and phrases. What is your family style?" Fori said, "Today I am fortunate to meet Buddha-Sun." Then he asked, "Hidden and secret, complete and true—people know they have the Way but cannot speak it; too much is blameless. People know they have the Way and can speak it. In these two paths, people still rise and fall. I wonder, Master, when you speak of your own Way, how do you speak it?" The Master said, "Where I speak of the Way, there is nothing to speak of." Fori said, "On the Tathagata's road there is no crookedness. Please let a profound note harmonize a round." The Master said, "Let your two wheels shine on each other in turn; the jade pool beyond the clouds has no concern with it." Fori said, "I report to the boundless white-haired guests: this time, do not return home while young." The Master said, "Young and old share the same wheel with no front or back; my profound road has no deviations." Fori said, "One word settles the world; for whom are the four lines proclaimed?" The Master said, "You speak of three or four; I say not even one exists in it." On account of this, the Master had a verse: East and west do not look at each other; North and south—with whom do they remain? You speak of three or four; I say not even one exists. On the twenty-eighth day of the ninth month of the fourth year of Guanghua, he addressed the assembly and passed away.
