> He was from Weinan in Huazhou. He first asked Qingfeng, "What is the practitioner's own self?" Feng said, "The Fire Boy comes seeking fire." Later he visited Fayan. Yan asked, "Where do you come from?" The Master said, "Qingfeng." Yan said, "What words does Qingfeng have?" The Master brought up the previous conversation. Yan said, "How do you understand it, Upadhyaya?" The Master said, "The Fire Boy belongs to fire, yet he seeks fire. It is like seeking oneself with oneself." Yan said, "How can you get it by understanding it that way?" The Master said, "I only understand it that way. I do not know how the Reverend would understand it." Yan said, "You ask me, and I will tell you." The Master asked, "What is the practitioner's own self?" Yan said, "The Fire Boy comes seeking fire." At these words the Master was suddenly enlightened. On the day he opened the hall, King Li and Fayan were both present. A monk asked, "When the dragon sings, mist rises; when the tiger roars, wind is born. The practitioner knows these are matters beyond the world. Why is it that here I do not understand?" The Master said, "Understand it well." The monk raised his head, looked at the Master, then looked at Fayan, and withdrew into the assembly. Fayan and King Li at that moment changed color. Fayan returned to the abbot's quarters and sent an attendant to summon the monk who had asked the question. Fayan said, "Upadhyaya, as for the words you asked about just now, I grant that you have the eye. Before the assembly of humans and gods, why did you not bow and cover it up?" Fayan flicked his sitting cloth. Three days later, the monk spat light and died. A monk asked, "Clearly seeing the Buddha-nature—what is the Buddha-nature?" The Master said, "I do not want to say it directly." He asked, "What is the Vajra Great Being?" The Master said, "Have you seen him?" He asked, "What is the secret place of all the sages?" The Master said, "You must instead understand your own self." He said, "What is the Reverend's secret place?" The Master said, "Wait until you understand, then you will get it." He ascended the hall and said, "All you venerable ones, each of you has the constantly perfect moon. Each of you carries a priceless treasure. Therefore, when the moon is in the clouds, though bright, it does not shine. When wisdom is hidden within delusion, though true, it does not penetrate. Nothing to do—stand long." A monk asked, "What is the Unmoving Honored One?" The Master said, "Flying, soaring." He asked, "What is the one phrase of clear understanding?" The Master said, "What difficulty is there in answering you?" He said, "If you speak that way, is that not it?" The Master said, "If I do not answer, what difficulty is there?" He said, "I deeply receive the Reverend's speaking that way." The Master said, "You say that I said what?" He asked, "Where does a deceased monk go when he passes away?" The Master said, "Wait until you are born, then I will tell you." He said, "Guest and host are clearly distinguished." The Master said, "You are standing right here seeing a deceased monk." A monk asked, "What is the practitioner's original mind?" The Master said, "Have you ever spoken of it?" He said, "If one does speak of it, how should one realize it?" The Master said, "Wait until you ask, then you will get it." He asked, "The teachings say, 'The tree can produce fruit, and it becomes the color of crystal.' I do not know who gets to eat this fruit." The Master said, "Where does the tree come from?" He said, "The practitioner has a share." The Master said, "Go—the fruit is eighty-four thousand." He asked, "What is the meaning of non-movement?" The Master said, "Rivers race and pour; sun and moon revolve and flow." He asked, "As for the profound essentials in the school of the patriarchs, please, Master, give one phrase." The Master said, "How long have you been wandering on pilgrimage?" He said, "I have never met a companion." The Master said, "You are short on sleep."
