> Master Lingyin Dezhang

> At first, the Master resided in the Western Canon Repository of Daxiangguo Temple. On the first day of the ninth month in the eighth year of Qingli (1048), Emperor Renzong summoned the Master to a banquet beneath Yanchun Pavilion. The Emperor then called upon Great Master Puzhao to ask, “What is the one phrase that meets the moment?” The Master replied, “A single word soars beyond the blue empyrean; before a ten-thousand-ren peak, one walks where it is perilous.” The Emperor asked, “What does it mean to walk where it is perilous?” The Master gave a shout. The Emperor said, “Before the Emperor—how dare you act like this?” The Master said, “Nor can this be let pass.” In the following year, the Master was again summoned to an inner palace banquet. The Emperor again called upon Puzhao to ask, “What is taking away the person without taking away the environment?” The Master replied, “Thunder startles the fine grass; shoots begin to sprout. On the high mountain, take your steps—do not delay.” The Emperor asked, “What is taking away the environment without taking away the person?” The Master replied, “Wearing horns and draped in fur—a different form; free to come and go, tracing any course.” The Emperor asked, “What is taking away both person and environment?” The Master replied, “Leaving the gate, the horizons stretch far beyond; the drifting light casts shadows that are not real.” The Emperor asked, “What is taking away neither person nor environment?” The Master replied, “In the cold forest, no lingering guest; by the vast sea, one hears the dragon’s roar.” Later, the Master was again summoned to a meal in Huacheng Hall. The Emperor called upon Shouxian to ask, “With this great feast spread out, how should one repay the holy sovereign?” The Master replied, “Seeking the traces of a bird in the sky.” Asked, “What is the meaning?” The Master replied, “Searching for the tracks of a fish within the water.” The Master then offered a song on the Mind-Pearl: "The mind-pearl, the mind-pearl, Follows conditions naturally, never apart. Just know: do not seek outside— Seek outside, and you will never find it. Wasted effort conceals the true principle. Know the mind-pearl, radiant as the sun, Hidden deep and secret, without form or substance. Taken up in the palm, it startles the crowd— How could the diligence of the Two Vehicles fathom it? The blue-eyed barbarian pointed it out: Its marvel at the critical moment has never failed. In daily life, do not casually show it— Mountains and rivers would tremble to their core." In the second year of Huangyou (1050), the Master requested permission to retire to the mountains and nourish his old age. The Emperor granted him the abbotship of Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou, and bestowed upon him the title Mingjue (Clear Enlightenment).
