> Master Xinghua Shaoqing of Tanzhou

> The master ascended the hall and said: "Within the gate of the patriarchs, the Buddha's Dharma does not dwell. In the hall of good teachings, talk of benevolence and righteousness is set aside. Even so, matters are never one-sided. I have heard it said: 'Alas, alas, my parents! They labored to give me life. How can I repay such deep kindness? Boundless as the azure sky!' 'Hair and skin, the body itself—dare not be injured or destroyed.' This is the filial piety of Confucius. 'Reborn and revolving within the three realms, love and attachment cannot be abandoned. To cast off attachment and enter the unconditioned—this is true repayment of kindness.' Thus our great awakened World-Honored One practiced austerities in the Snow Mountains, attained enlightenment at Magadha, and ascended to the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven to expound the Dharma for his mother. This is the filial piety of Śākyamuni. 'Having attained great liberation, wielding great supernatural powers, raising his golden staff, bearing his alms bowl shaped like a dragon, he went to the gates of hell and stood there, searching deeply. There he saw his loving mother, weeping without measure.' This is the filial piety of Maudgalyāyana. What then is the filial piety of Xinghua?" After a long pause, he said: "Xinghua today ascends not to heaven, nor descends into hell. In the hall of good teachings, upon the throne of the Lamp King, he expounds the Dharma for his mother, to repay her loving toil. Tell me—where is my mother right now?" Then he said: "My mother, in life, had good karmic roots. No need to ask the Buddha whether she was born in heaven. A life of ninety years, short of a hundred—how rare in this world." Then he descended from the seat. "May I presume to ask the assembly to burn a stick of incense, to aid this mountain monk in repaying filial piety? Since she is my mother, why should I trouble you all to burn incense on her behalf? Have you not heard it said: 'When a family of the east loses someone, the family of the west joins in the mourning cries.'" He struck his chest with his hand and cried: "Heavens! Heavens!"
