> Master Rui of Dongshan in Xiangzhou

僧問。道有又無時如何。師曰。龍頭蛇尾。腰間一劒。問。如何是無生曲。師曰。未問已前。

> A monk asked, "What about when the Way exists and yet does not exist?" The master said, "A dragon's head, a snake's tail—a sword at the waist." Another asked, "What is the song of the unborn?" The master said, "Before you asked, it was already there."
