> Master Danxia Zichun of Dengzhou

> A young man from the Jia family in Jianzhou became a monk at twenty. He attained profound enlightenment in the monastery of Furong. The master ascended the hall and said, "Within heaven and earth, throughout the universe, there is a precious treasure hidden in the mountain of form. When Master Zhao spoke thus, he only pointed at traces and paths but could not directly reveal it to people. Today, Danxia will split open the universe, shatter the mountain of form, and bring it out for everyone. Those with discerning eyes should recognize it." He struck the ground with his staff and said, "Do you see it? A heron standing in snow is not the same color; bright moonlight on reeds does not resemble it." The master ascended the hall and said, citing Deshan's instruction to the assembly: "Our school has no words or phrases; truly there is not a single dharma to give to anyone." When Deshan spoke thus, he was merely searching for people in the grass, unaware that his whole body was covered in mud and water. Upon careful examination, he only had one eye. If it were Danxia, it would not be so. Our school has words and phrases—even a golden knife cannot cut them open. Its profound and mysterious meaning is like a jade maiden conceiving at night. The master ascended the hall and said, "At high noon, the sun still lacks half its fullness; in the deep silence of midnight, the moon has not yet become complete. The six sense doors have never known warmth, and comings and goings always occur before the bright moon." The master ascended the hall and said, "The precious moon radiates its brilliance, and the clear pond casts its reflection. Water has no intention of dipping the moon, and the moon has no mind to shine separately. When both water and moon are forgotten, only then can one speak of cutting off. Therefore it is said: Matters of ascending to heaven must be cast away; matters of perfect completion must be discarded. The golden sound striking the ground need not be looked back upon. Only if one can be thus can one begin to walk among different species. People here, do you understand this?" After a long pause, he said, "Always walking without raising human footsteps, wearing fur and bearing horns, mingling with dust and mud." A monk asked, "What was it like when Niutou had not yet seen the Fourth Patriarch?" The master said, "Golden chrysanthemums just blooming, bees vying to gather." The monk asked, "What about after seeing him?" The master said, "When the seedlings wither and flowers fall, there is nothing to rely on." In the spring of the Jihai year of the Xuanhe era, he passed away. His complete body was enshrined in a pagoda south of Mount Hong.
