### 隨州大洪法為禪師

天台鮑氏子。上堂。法身無相。不可以音聲求。妙道亡言。豈可以文字會。縱使超佛越祖。猶落階梯。直饒說妙談玄。終挂唇齒。須是功熏不犯。形跡不留。枯木寒巖。更無津潤。幻人木馬。情識皆空。方能垂手入鄽。轉身異類。不見道。無漏國中留不住。却來煙塢臥寒沙。

> A native of the Bao family in Tiantai. At a formal Dharma assembly, he said: "The Dharmakaya is formless; it cannot be sought through sound or voice. The wondrous Path is beyond words; how could it be grasped through written characters? Even if one surpasses the Buddhas and transcend the patriarchs, one still remains within the bounds of stages. Even if one speaks of the sublime and discusses the mysterious, ultimately it lingers on the lips and teeth. One must cultivate without leaving traces, leaving no mark of form or shape. Like a withered tree on a cold cliff, with no further moisture. Like an illusory person or a wooden horse, where all consciousness and emotion are empty. Only then can one lower one's hands and enter the marketplace, turning the body to dwell among other kinds. Have you not heard it said: 'In the land of the undefiled, one cannot remain; instead, one returns to the misty dell and lies upon the cold sand.'"
