### 韶州披雲智寂禪師

> Master Zhi Ji of Piyun, Shaozhou

僧問。如何是披雲境。師曰。白日沒閑人。問。如何是不遷義。師曰。山高不礙白雲飛。問。以字不成。八字不是。未審是甚麼字。師曰。聽老僧一偈。以字不是八不成。森羅萬象此中明。直饒巧說千般妙。不是謳阿不是經。問。如何是色空。師曰。拾取落花生舊枝。問。如何是一塵。師曰。滿目是青山。問。如何是毗盧藏中有大經卷。師曰。拈不得。曰。為甚拈不得。師曰。特地却成愁。

> A monk asked, "What is the state of Piyun?" The master said, "In broad daylight, there is no idle person." The monk asked, "What is the meaning of impermanence?" The master said, "The mountain is high, yet it does not hinder the floating clouds." The monk asked, "The character 'yi' is not complete, and the character 'ba' is not right—what character is it?" The master said, "Listen to this old monk's verse: 'Yi' is not the character, 'ba' is not complete, All phenomena under the sun are clear in this. Even if one speaks with a thousand wondrous words, It is neither a chant nor a scripture.'" The monk asked, "What is form and emptiness?" The master said, "Pick up the fallen flower and return it to the old branch." The monk asked, "What is a single dust particle?" The master said, "The eyes are filled with green mountains." The monk asked, "What is the great sutra stored within the Vairocana treasury?" The master said, "It cannot be grasped." The monk asked, "Why can it not be grasped?" The master said, "Trying to grasp it only brings sorrow."
