### 潭州谷山豐禪師

> Master Feng of Gushan, Tanzhou

僧問。師唱誰家曲。宗風嗣阿誰。師曰。雪嶺梅花綻。雲洞老僧驚。上堂。駿馬機前異。遊人肘後懸。既參雲外客。試為老僧看。時有僧纔出。師便打。曰。何不早出頭來。便下座。

> A monk asked, "Master, whose tune do you sing? Whose tradition do you carry on?" The master said, "Plum blossoms bloom on the snowy peak; the old monk in the cloud cave is startled." Then, addressing the assembly, he said, "A fine steed stands out before the mechanism; a traveler carries something behind his elbow. Since you have come to consult this guest beyond the clouds, try to see it for this old monk." At that moment, a monk was about to step forward, but the master immediately struck him and said, "Why didn't you come forward earlier?" Then he descended from his seat.
