> Zen Master Zongze Cijue of Changlu, Zhenzhou

> A monk from the Sun family in Luozhou asked the master, "Bodhidharma faced the wall—what is the meaning of this?" The master remained silent for a long time. The monk bowed. The master said, "Today, this monk's question has left me speechless." The master addressed the assembly: "Winter ends, Cold Food Festival comes—one hundred and five days. On the road of the living, countless dead. Heads钻进 thorny forests, thinking sentient beings suffer. What about tomb-sweeping? Adding more earth to bone mounds. Only those who have left home do not tread the path of non-birth. Great assembly, tell me—where do they go? Do you understand? Southward, Tiantai; northward, Wutai. Reflect on this." The master addressed the assembly: "Silla has no special secret—when it's time to speak, don't fear a cut tongue. If only mind and mouth correspond, a lifetime won't exhaust its use. But tell me, what is the phrase where mind and mouth correspond?" After a long pause, he said, "A scorched brick hits the frozen bottom. Reflect on this." A monk asked, "When the six sense gates are not yet stilled, what then?" The master said, "Burning incense in your nostrils." The monk said, "I don't understand." The master said, "Beating a drum in your ears." A monk asked, "What is the merit of no-merit?" The master said, "The clay ox doesn't move a step, yet no wasteland remains under heaven." The monk said, "In that case, merit is not wasted." The master said, "Though it has vast supernatural powers, it still can't avoid a harsh beating." The master addressed the assembly: "Though gold dust is precious, in the eye it becomes a cataract. Once the gold dust is removed, where is the eye? If you're like this, you haven't left the thorny forest. Seeking proof at the tip of a staff, accepting under a shout—you're still trapped in the nest of Golden Peak." The master addressed the assembly: "Outside the tower, Mount Zijin's colors are beautiful; before the gate, sweet dew water's sound is cold. In the shade of the old locust tree, within the cool breeze—let me point again for you all." He raised his staff and said, "Do you see it?" He struck the incense table and said, "Do you hear it?" Then he set down the staff and said, "If eyes and ears are connected, everywhere is enough. The sound of water and the colors of mountains naturally drift on."
