### 越州延慶可復禪師

上堂。胡來胡現。漢來漢現。忽然胡漢俱來時。如何祗準。良久曰。落霞與孤鶩齊飛。秋水共長天一色。參。上堂。驀拈拄杖橫按膝上。曰。苦痛深。苦痛深。碧潭千萬丈。那箇是知音。卓一下。下座。

> The master took the high seat and said: "When a barbarian comes, the barbarian appears. When a Han comes, the Han appears. But what if both barbarian and Han come at once? How would you respond?" After a long pause, he said: "Falling sunset clouds fly together with a lone duck; autumn waters share the same color with the vast sky. Reflect on this." The master took the high seat again, suddenly raised his staff and rested it across his knee. He said: "The suffering runs deep. The suffering runs deep. In the green pool, ten thousand fathoms deep—who is the one who truly knows the tune?" He struck the ground once with the staff and then descended from the seat.
