> Kongshi Daoren Zhitong

> This is the story of Fan Xun's daughter, Longtu. She was intelligent and wise from childhood. When she grew up, she married Su Di, the grandson of the Chancellor Su Song. Before long, she grew weary of worldly life and returned home, seeking permission to shave her head and become a nun. Her father opposed it, so she devoted herself to pure practice instead. One day, while studying the contemplation of the Dharma Realm, she suddenly experienced a profound awakening. She composed two verses to express her understanding. The first verse: Within the vast and teeming world, the essence is one; All things interweave and mutually seal the Vairocana. The entire wave is water, yet the wave is not water; The entire water becomes waves, yet water itself remains distinct. The second verse: Things and self are originally without difference; The myriad phenomena are all like reflections in a mirror. Clearly transcending subject and object, Perfectly penetrating true emptiness. One body contains many dharmas, Interwoven like jewels in Indra's net. In layer upon layer of infinite depths, Both movement and stillness are perfectly complete. Later, when both her parents had passed away, her elder brother Juan, who served as the magistrate of Fenning, brought her along with him. Hearing of the great reputation of Chan Master Sixin, she went to visit him. The master saw at once the depth of her understanding. He asked her, "The Ever-Weeping Bodhisattva sold his own heart and liver—to whom did he teach Prajna?" Tong replied, "If you have no mind, then I too am at rest." He asked again, "The same rain nourishes all, yet roots and sprouts differ. On ground without yin or yang, what grows there?" Tong replied, "One flower, five petals." He asked once more, "During the twelve hours of the day, where do you settle your body and establish your life?" Tong said, "Venerable Master, you had best take care of your eyebrows." The master struck her and said, "This woman is spouting nonsense in random order!" Tong bowed, and the master acknowledged her awakening. From then on, her reputation in the Dharma spread far and wide. During the Zhenghe era, she resided in Jinling. She once arranged a bathing ceremony at Baoning Temple and posted a notice on the gate: "Not a single thing exists—what is there to wash? If even a speck of dust is present, where did it come from? Speak one profound phrase, and only then may everyone enter the bath. Guling only knew how to scrub backs; How could the awakened one ever have understood the mind? If you wish to realize the stage beyond defilement, You must sweat through your entire body. Everyone says water can wash away dirt— How do they know that water too is dust? Even if water and dirt are suddenly removed, At this point, you must still wash it away." Later she became a nun under the name Weijiu and settled at Xizhu in Suzhou. Monks and laypeople alike sought her guidance day and night, and many attained the Way through her teaching. Before long, she fell ill and wrote a verse, then passed away sitting cross-legged in meditation. Her Record of Illuminating the Mind is preserved and circulated in the world.
