> Zen Master Ximing of Zhengfa Temple, Chengdu

> A monk from Hanzhou. After the summer retreat ended, he ascended the hall and said: "Forest leaves fall one by one; the universe signals early autumn. Clearly, this is the intention of the Western Patriarchs—why seek it elsewhere? If you can understand it this way, you will truly believe that the path of the Buddhas and Patriarchs is naturally level and even. The great gate of Liberation has never had a lock or key. It pervades the cosmos and fills all of space. Its measure cannot be fathomed, and wisdom cannot grasp it. If you have not yet understood this principle and failed to reach its source, even if you cultivate meritorious deeds for a hundred eons and refine your practice for a thousand lives, you will only weary yourself in vain, with no real connection to it. If you deeply understand this principle and penetrate its source, then you will know that in movement and stillness, in all actions, in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, every moment accords with the Path, and every thought returns to the source. Did not the Patriarch say: 'Delusion gives rise to stillness and chaos; awakening has no like or dislike. Cast away gain and loss, right and wrong all at once.' Thus, who is deluded and who is awakened? Who is right and who is wrong? It is simply that each of you creates your own biased views—seeing things as large or small, clinging to being or non-being. Your own spiritual radiance shines uniquely, yet you refuse to acknowledge it. The mind-moon shines alone and full, yet you create divisions against it. Is this not like abandoning your father at home or forgetting the pearl hidden in your robe? Because of this, on the road to Enlightenment, thorns grow into a forest, and within the space of Liberation, misty clouds obscure the sun. Today, I, this mountain monk, am fortunate to encounter the monks at the end of the retreat and the returning teachers from the mountains. All you virtuous ones have honorably come to visit. I cannot remain silent, so I will casually share some words, briefly opening a door of skillful means for the present time. But you must all pay attention and each observe carefully. If you hesitate and ponder further, a white cloud will drift a thousand miles away." Then he raised his staff and said, "If you clearly understand this, the assembly at Vulture Peak is vividly present before your eyes. If not, wait until tomorrow morning for further instructions."
