> Great Master Foxing Fatai of Tanzhou Dawei

> A native of Hanzhou, surnamed Li. A monk asked: "Principle follows phenomena, encompassing the myriad existences while remaining one tranquil void. Phenomena merge with principle, equalizing the thousand distinctions and all returning to ultimate reality. What is the Dharma realm of principle?" The master said: "Mountains, rivers, and the great earth." The monk asked: "What is the Dharma realm of phenomena?" The master said: "The myriad forms, dense and interwoven." The monk asked: "What is the Dharma realm of unimpeded interpenetration of principle and phenomena?" The master said: "East, west, south, north." The monk asked: "What is the Dharma realm of unimpeded interpenetration of all phenomena?" The master said: "Above, below, and the four intermediate directions." Ascending the hall, he said: "Pursue truth, and truth has no form. Exhaust delusion, and delusion has no shape. When both truth and delusion are absent, the vast open eye is revealed. Once the eye is revealed, what do you see? The morning sun blazes open the snow by the cliff; the north wind bursts open the winter plum blossoms." Ascending the hall, he said: "When the precious sword is drawn, use it—how could there be hesitation? When the eyebrows are raised, act—no more turning back. Everywhere it shines through the present and illumines the ancient; everywhere it cuts through nets and cages. It does not touch the blade's edge, nor does it rely on reflection. Standing uniquely beyond all things—set that aside for now. When all myriad functions are extinguished, what then? In the eighth month of autumn, where is the heat?" Ascending the hall, he said: "Nirvana has no separate path; skillful means has many gates." He raised his staff and said: "Look, look. My staff has swallowed the entire West River in one gulp. The carp of the East Sea leaps up to the thirty-third heaven. Indra, enraged, slaps Mount Sumeru and shatters it to pieces. The steadfast earth deity presses palms together and praises: 'Clearly observe the Dharma king's Dharma—the Dharma king's Dharma is thus.'" He struck the meditation bench with his staff and descended from the seat. Ascending the hall, he said: "Realizing that both person and Dharma are empty—still not worthy of the ancestral patriarchs' family style. Fully embodying total function and total illumination—still not the essential marvel of the patch-robed monk. You must smash the final barrier and recognize the aperture pointing upward. What is the aperture pointing upward? The spring chill is biting; it freezes the young to death." Ascending the hall, he said: "Today is already half of the first month; lanterns blaze everywhere in confusion. The whole city is crowded with silks and satins, people mingling and wandering for pleasure. Mañjuśrī steps into the bustling basket; Samantabhadra sits upright in a high tower watching. Tell me, where is Guanyin? Thunderous drums shake the sky; music fills the earth." Ascending the hall, he said: "Vast and far-reaching, encompassing the ten directions. Open and unobstructed, beyond form and appearance. The eye wishes to see but the pupil withers; the mouth wishes to speak but words fail. Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra have no tricks at all. Linji and Deshan still manage to teach. The turtle swallows the iron ox of Shaan Prefecture; the snake bites the great statue of Jia Prefecture. The carp of the East Sea is so scared its belly is swollen to this very day. Heh!" Ascending the hall, he said: "Fire clouds scorch the young seedlings; springs and streams have run dry. The great dragon king of the Sāgara—no one knows where he has gone." He struck the meditation bench with his staff and said: "Right here. Look, look. Clouds rise from the southern mountain; rain falls on the northern mountain. This old monk further sends thunder and lightning, boosting its brilliant power to spread far and wide." Then he shouted: "Boom and rumble, boom and rumble!" Ascending the hall, he said: "Sometimes what is spoken is wrong; sometimes what is spoken is right. Coarse words and refined speech all return to the ultimate truth. The bowl of Old Man Śākyamuni rings; Bodhidharma's coming from the West smells of shit. Only the water buffalo before the mountain lets its light radiate throughout heaven and earth." Ascending the hall, he said: "Thinking and losing thought—none are not liberation. What kind of talk is that? Formation and dissolution of dharmas—both are called nirvana. Completely irrelevant. Wisdom and ignorance—both are prajñā. Sluggish Buddha-nature. The accomplishments of bodhisattvas and heretics—all are bodhi. Still a bit off. But even so, this is like Yang Guang losing his camel." Ascending the hall, he said: "If you want to know where the Buddha goes, it is just this sound of speech. Halt! Great Master Fu didn't know good from bad, corrupting people's sons and daughters with his bright and luminous talk. Patriarch Zhi Gong shouted: 'Great master, don't speak that way. Say something else.' The great master then spoke a verse: 'Empty-handed, holding a hoe; walking on foot, riding a water buffalo. A person crosses the bridge; the bridge flows, the water does not.' Zhi Gong laughed heartily and said: 'The beginning is still acceptable; the end is even more troubling.'" Ascending the hall, he said: "I recall in the days of my wandering, I obtained two kinds of things. One was a vajra hammer; the other was the bones of a thousand sages. I carried them throughout the universe, my bearing lofty and towering. For thirty years I used them as my standard. But now I am old—what are these things after all? I cast down the vajra hammer, shatter the bones of the thousand sages, and throw them into the crossroads. I can no longer begrudge them. Let me drift through this fleeting life as I please, pointing south and calling it north, calling a turtle a soft-shelled turtle, calling beans grain. Let those with clear eyes laugh at me for having no standards."
