### 泉州延福寒巖慧升禪師

> Master Huisheng of Hanyan, Yanfu Temple, Quanzhou

建寧人也。上堂。喝一喝曰。盡十方世界。會十世古今。都盧在裏許。畐畐塞塞了也。若乃放開一鍼鋒許。則大海西流。巨嶽倒卓。黿鼉魚龍。鰕蟹蚯蚓。盡向平地上湧出波瀾。游泳鼓舞。然雖如是。更須向百尺竿頭自進一步。則步步踏轉無盡藏輪。方知道鼻孔搭在上脣。眉毛不在眼下。還相委悉麼。復喝一喝曰。切忌轉喉觸諱。

> A native of Jianning. Ascending the hall, he gave a shout and said: "The entire world in all ten directions, encompassing ten generations of past and present—all of it is contained right here, packed tight and filled to the brim. But if you were to release it by the width of a single needle's point, then the great ocean would flow westward, the mighty peaks would stand on their heads. Turtles, alligators, fish, dragons, shrimp, crabs, earthworms—all would surge forth with waves from flat ground, swimming and dancing in delight. Yet even so, you must take one more step from the top of a hundred-foot pole. Then, with every step, you turn the wheel of the inexhaustible treasury. Only then will you realize that your nostrils are attached to your upper lip, and your eyebrows are not beneath your eyes. Do you now understand?" He gave another shout and said: "Above all, take care not to trip over your own tongue."
