Thus have I heard:
Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "If living beings found no flavor in form, they would not be defiled by form. But because living beings find flavor in form, they become defiled and attached. In the same way, if living beings found no flavor in feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, they would not be defiled by consciousness. But because living beings find flavor in feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, they become defiled and attached to consciousness."
"Monks, if form were not a source of trouble for beings, they would not grow weary of form. But because form is a source of trouble for beings, they do grow weary of form. In the same way, if feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness were not a source of trouble, beings would not grow weary of consciousness. But because feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are a source of trouble for beings, they do grow weary of consciousness."
"Monks, if there were no escape from form for living beings, they would not be able to escape from form. But because there is an escape from form for living beings, they do escape from form. In the same way, if there were no escape from feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness for living beings, they would not be able to escape from consciousness. But because there is an escape from feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness for living beings, they do escape from consciousness."
"Monks, if I had not truly known, in accordance with reality, the gratification in the five aggregates of clinging as gratification, the danger as danger, and the escape as escape, then I would not have been freed, released, and escaped from this world with its devas, its Maras, its Brahmas, its ascetics, and its brahmins, among gods and humans. I would have remained forever in confusion, and I could not have personally realized and attained Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi."
"Monks, because I have truly and accurately understood the five aggregates of clinging—their allure as allure, their danger as danger, and the escape from them as escape—I have realized for myself liberation, transcendence, release, and freedom from the bonds of entanglement amid the heavens, Māra, Brahmā, ascetics, brahmins, and the assemblies of gods and humans. I no longer dwell in distortion, and I have also realized for myself supreme perfect enlightenment."
When the monks heard what the Buddha said, they rejoiced and put it into practice.
