> Chapter 40

> This is what I heard:

> At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in the city of Shravasti.

> Then the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "Where there is clinging, there is no liberation. Where there is no clinging, there is liberation. What is clinging that brings no liberation? Monks, it is when consciousness takes a stand, clinging to the four kinds of grasping aggregates. What are the four? Consciousness clings and takes a stand in form; it clings and takes a stand in feeling, perception, and volitional formations. Because it is bound to these realms, this is called clinging, and thus there is no liberation. What is non-clinging that brings liberation? It is being free from desire in regard to form; being free from desire in regard to feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness. Extending all the way to purity and truth—this is non-clinging, and thus there is liberation."
