> This is what I heard:

> At that time, the Buddha was dwelling at Kāśyapaśilāśāla, accompanied by a thousand monks, all of whom were formerly matted-hair Brahmins.

> At that time, the World-Honored One demonstrated three kinds of teachings to the thousand bhikkhus. What are these three? The demonstration of miraculous powers, the demonstration of reading others’ minds, and the demonstration of instruction.

> The display of supernatural powers means that the World-Honored One, according to what is appropriate, manifests entering deep meditation and absorption, soaring through the air to the east, and performing the four dignified postures—walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. He enters the fire concentration, emitting various lights of blue, yellow, red, white, crimson, and crystal colors. Fire and water appear together: sometimes fire emerges from below his body while water flows from above, or fire emerges from above while water flows from below. This manifestation extends equally in all four directions. Then, the World-Honored One, having performed these various miraculous transformations, sits amidst the assembly. This is called the display of supernatural powers.

> The manifestation of others' minds is like this: as their mind is, as their intention is, as their consciousness is—they should think in this way, they should not think in that way, they should let go in this way, they should abide in this bodily realization. This is called the manifestation of others' minds.

> The one who teaches and reveals says, as the World-Honored One taught: "Monks, everything is burning. What is everything that is burning? The eye is burning, and forms, eye-consciousness, eye-contact, and the feelings that arise from eye-contact—whether pleasant, painful, or neither pleasant nor painful—they too are burning. So also the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are burning; and mental objects, mind-consciousness, mind-contact, and the feelings that arise from mind-contact—whether pleasant, painful, or neither pleasant nor painful—they too are burning. With what are they burning? They are burning with the fire of greed, with the fire of hatred, with the fire of delusion; they are burning with birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair."

> At that time, a thousand monks heard the Buddha’s teaching. Their minds were freed, and no more defilements arose. After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, the monks rejoiced and respectfully put it into practice.
