> Chapter 198

> This is what I heard:

> At one time, the Buddha was dwelling at Vulture Peak in Rajagriha.

> At that time, Venerable Rahula approached the Buddha, bowed at his feet, stepped back, and stood to one side. He addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One, how should I know and perceive my inner consciousness and all external phenomena, so that attachment to 'I,' 'mine,' and 'I am' does not arise?"

> At that time, the World-Honored One said to Rahula: "Excellent, Rahula! You are able to inquire into the profound meaning of the Tathagata."

> The Buddha said to Rahula: "Whether the eye is of the past, the future, or the present; whether it is internal or external; whether it is coarse or subtle; whether it is beautiful or ugly; whether it is far or near—all of these are to be truly known as: 'This is not mine, this is not me, this is not my self.' The same applies to the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind."

> "Rahula, when one knows and sees in this way—regarding this body of consciousness and all external appearances—then the bonds of 'I,' 'mine,' and 'I am' no longer arise within them. Rahula, when these bonds of 'I,' 'mine,' and 'I am' no longer arise, that is what we call cutting off craving, undoing the knots, attaining true insight, and reaching the end of suffering."

> When the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, Venerable Rahula, having heard the Buddha's teaching, joyfully accepted and practiced it.

> Just as with the internal sense bases, so it is with the external sense bases: forms, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and mental objects. Eye-consciousness, ear-, nose-, tongue-, body-, and mind-consciousness. Eye-contact, ear-, nose-, tongue-, body-, and mind-contact. Feeling born of eye-contact, feeling born of ear-, nose-, tongue-, body-, and mind-contact. Perception born of eye-contact, perception born of ear-, nose-, tongue-, body-, and mind-contact. Volition born of eye-contact, volition born of ear-, nose-, tongue-, body-, and mind-contact. Craving born of eye-contact, craving born of ear-, nose-, tongue-, body-, and mind-contact. All are as explained above.
