> (209)

> Thus have I heard:

> At one time, the Buddha was staying in the land of Vaishali, at the Amrapali Garden, the dwelling place of the physician Jīvaka Komārabhacca.

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "There are six fields of contact. What are the six? The field of contact of the eye, and the fields of contact of the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. If monks and brahmins do not truly know the arising, the cessation, the gratification, the danger, and the escape regarding these six fields of contact, you should know that such monks and brahmins are far from my Dharma and discipline, as far as the sky is from the earth."

> Then a certain monk rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, paid homage to the Buddha, and with palms joined together said to the Buddha: "I fully and truly understand the origin, the cessation, the allure, the drawbacks, and the escape from these six sense bases of contact."

> The Buddha said to the monks: "I will ask you now, and you should answer according to my questions. Monks, when you experience contact through the eye, do you see that as 'I,' 'mine,' or 'my self'?"

> They replied, "No, World-Honored One!"

> The Buddha said to the monks: "Excellent! Excellent! When it comes to the eye and its contact objects, one truly sees and knows that this is not self, not different from self, and not containing self. Then no mental defilements arise, the mind is not attached, and the mind gains liberation. This is called the first contact point that has been cut off and fully understood—its root severed, like a palm tree cut at the top, never to grow again in the future. That is, eye-consciousness and forms. Do you see the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, along with their contact objects, as being self, different from self, or containing self?"

> They replied, "No, World-Honored One!"

> The Buddha told the monks: "Excellent! Excellent! When it comes to the contact points of the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind — these are not self, not other than self, and do not contain a self — one who truly knows and sees this way does not give rise to taints, the mind is not defiled or attached, and the mind attains liberation. This is called a monk who has severed and fully understood the six contact points, cut them off at the root, like cutting off the top of a palm tree, so that in future lives they will never grow again — namely, mind-consciousness and mental objects."
