> Chapter 267

> Thus have I heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

> At that time, the World-Honored One said to the monks: "Sentient beings, trapped in beginningless birth and death, are shrouded by ignorance and bound by the shackles of craving, wandering through the long night of cyclic existence without ever seeing the end of suffering. Monks! Imagine a dog tied by a rope to a post—because the rope is never loosened, it circles around the post, whether standing or lying down, never leaving it. Likewise, ordinary foolish beings, not free from greed, attachment, longing, or thirst for form, revolve around form, turning with it, whether standing or lying down, never apart from it. In the same way, with feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, they revolve around these, turning with them, whether standing or lying down, never apart from consciousness."

> Monks, you should carefully contemplate and observe the mind. Why is that? Because over the long course of time, the mind is tainted by greed, aversion, and ignorance. Monks, when the mind is afflicted, beings are afflicted; when the mind is pure, beings are pure. Monks, I do not see any form that is as varied as the spotted bird, yet the mind is even more so. Why is that? Because the minds of these creatures are varied, their forms are varied.

> Therefore, monastics, you should reflect deeply and observe the mind. Over the long course of time, the mind is stained by craving, aversion, and delusion. Because the mind is troubled, beings are troubled; because the mind is pure, beings are pure. Monastics, you should know this—do you see the Kalaviṅka bird with its many varied colors?
