> Chapter 274

> Thus have I heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "What does not belong to you—let it go. Once you let it go, you will find lasting peace and joy. Monks, what do you think? In this Jeta Grove, if someone carried away the grass, trees, branches, and leaves, would you think, 'These things are mine—why is that person taking them away?'"

> They replied, "No, World-Honored One!"

> "Why is this? Because they are neither self nor belonging to self. Likewise, O monks, you should let go of anything that is not yours. Having let go of those things, you will find peace and happiness for a long time. What is not yours? The eye—the eye is not yours. You should give it up. Having given it up, you will find peace and happiness for a long time. So too with the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. What do you think, monks? Is the eye permanent or impermanent?"

> It answered: "Impermanent."

> The World-Honored One further asked: “If all things are impermanent, are they then suffering?”

> He replied: "This is suffering, O Blessed One."

> Again asked: "If suffering and impermanence are changing phenomena, would a wise noble disciple still regard them as self, belonging to self, or as existing within self?"

> They replied, "No, World-Honored One!"

> The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are likewise. A learned noble disciple observes these six sense bases as not-self and not belonging to self. Having observed thus, they cling to nothing in the world. Because they cling to nothing, they are not attached. Because they are not attached, they personally realize Nirvana: "Birth is exhausted, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, and I know that there is no further existence."

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
