> Chapter 279

> Thus have I heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "If one does not tame, close, guard, uphold, or cultivate these six sense faculties, they will surely experience suffering in the future."

> What are the six sense faculties? The eye faculty, when not tamed, not closed off, not guarded, not cultivated, and not held firmly, will surely bring suffering in the future. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind faculties are likewise. A foolish, unlearned ordinary person, when the eye faculty perceives forms, grasps at their features and details. Allowing the eye faculty to follow its inclinations without restraint, they cling to the world's greed, craving, and unwholesome states, which leak into and defile the mind. Such a person cannot uphold restraint or protect the eye faculty. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind faculties are likewise. Thus, when these six faculties are not tamed, not closed off, not guarded, not held firmly, and not cultivated, they will surely bring suffering in the future.

> How do the six sense faculties become well-tamed, well-guarded, well-protected, well-maintained, and well-cultivated, ensuring happiness in the future? A learned noble disciple, when seeing forms with the eyes, does not grasp onto appearances or details. Wherever the eyes may incline, they remain steady in virtuous conduct. Worldly desires, attachment, and unwholesome states cannot seep into the mind. Thus, one establishes virtue and properly protects the eye faculty. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind faculties are likewise. In this way, the six sense faculties—well-tamed, well-guarded, well-protected, well-maintained, and well-cultivated—will certainly bring happiness in the days to come.

> Then he spoke these verses:

> Monks who fail to guard the six sense doors, Suffer great pain through the long night. For such ones, one must always diligently train in restraint, With right faith and unwavering mind, so that no defilements leak into the heart. When the eye sees forms, whether pleasant or unpleasant, Do not let desire arise for the pleasant, nor aversion for the unpleasant. When the ear hears sounds, some agreeable, some not, Do not cling to the agreeable, nor stir ill will toward the unpleasant. When the nose smells scents, whether fragrant or foul, Keep an even mind toward both, without craving or rejection. When tasting flavors, some delicious, some not, Do not crave the delicious, nor reject the unpleasant. When the body feels pleasant touches, do not become heedless; When touched by painful sensations, do not harbor harmful thoughts. Let go of both pleasure and pain with equanimity— Do not let them grow, but let them cease. Whatever the mind observes, whatever its many objects, If one indulges in false conceptualization, desire and craving only increase. But recognizing these as unwholesome, one abides with a mind free from desire. Thus one restrains these six sense faculties, and is unmoved by the six sense objects— Having conquered all forces of temptation, one crosses to the far shore beyond birth and death.

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
