> Section 396

> Thus have I heard:

> Once, the Buddha was staying at the Deer Park in the land of Varanasi, where the sages dwelled.

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "Just as the sun rises, traveling through the sky, dispelling all darkness and shining forth with brilliant light—in the same way, for a noble disciple, when all things that arise have ceased, and they are freed from all defilements, the eye of Dharma arises. Along with this unmediated realization, three fetters are cut off. These are: the view of a self, attachment to precepts and rituals, and doubt. When these three fetters are completely eliminated, one is called a Stream-Enterer, one who will not fall into lower realms, one who is assured of awakening, destined to be reborn at most seven more times among gods and humans, and who will put an end to suffering. Even if such a noble disciple experiences worry and pain in the meantime, they have already departed from desire and unwholesome states. With applied thought and sustained thought, born of seclusion, filled with joy and happiness, they dwell fully established in the first stage of concentration. You will not find a single defilement remaining in that noble disciple that could cause them to be reborn in this world again. This is the great significance of the noble disciple gaining the eye of Dharma. Therefore, monks, for those who have not yet had unmediated realization of these Four Noble Truths, you should diligently apply yourselves, arousing heightened aspiration, and earnestly train in practice."

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the monks rejoiced in what they had heard and practiced it with devotion.
