> Chapter 421

如是我聞：

> Thus have I heard:

一時，佛住王舍城迦蘭陀竹園。

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Bamboo Grove of Kalandaka, near Rajagaha.

爾時，世尊告諸比丘：「汝等共行至深嶮巖。」

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks, saying: "Let us go together to the deep and perilous cliff."

諸比丘白佛：「唯然，世尊！」

> The monks replied to the Buddha, "Yes, World-Honored One."

爾時，世尊與諸大眾至深嶮巖，敷座而坐，周匝觀察深嶮巖已，告諸比丘：「此巖極大深嶮。」

> At that time, the World-Honored One, together with the great assembly, arrived at a deep and perilous cliff. He spread his seat and sat down. After carefully observing the deep cliff all around, he addressed the monks: "This cliff is extremely vast and perilously deep."

時，有異比丘從座起，整衣服，為佛作禮，合掌白佛言：「世尊！此極深嶮，然復有一極深嶮極嶮於此，甚可怖畏者不？」

> Then a certain monk rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, bowed to the Buddha, and with palms together said: "World-Honored One! This is an extremely deep and perilous place, but is there yet another peril even deeper and more terrifying than this?"

佛知其意，即告言：「如是，比丘！此極深嶮，然復有大深嶮嶮於此者，甚可怖畏，謂諸沙門、婆羅門於苦聖諦不如實知，苦集聖諦、苦滅聖諦、苦滅道跡聖諦不如實知，彼於生本諸行樂著，於老、病、死、憂、悲、惱、苦生本諸行樂著，而作是行；老、病、死、憂、悲、惱、苦行，轉增長故，墮於生深嶮之處；墮於老、病、死、憂、悲、惱、苦深嶮之處。如是，比丘！此則大深嶮嶮於此者。是故，比丘！於四聖諦未無間等者，當勤方便，起增上欲，學無間等。」

> The Buddha, understanding his intention, said to him: "Exactly so, monks! This is extremely deep and dangerous, but there is an even deeper and more perilous abyss than this—one that is truly terrifying. It is when ascetics and brahmins do not truly understand the Noble Truth of Suffering, do not truly understand the Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering, do not truly understand the Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering, and do not truly understand the Noble Truth of the Path Leading to the Cessation of Suffering. They cling to the formations that give rise to birth, and they delight in the formations that give rise to aging, illness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair. By engaging in these actions, their aging, illness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair only increase, causing them to fall into the deep abyss of birth, and into the deep abyss of aging, illness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair. Monks, this is the abyss that is even deeper and more perilous than the previous one. Therefore, monks, for those who have not yet directly realized the Four Noble Truths, they should strive with diligence, arouse intense aspiration, and train themselves to attain direct realization."

佛說此經已，諸比丘聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
