> Chapter 472

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Bamboo Grove of Kalandaka, near Rajagaha.

> At that time, the World-Honored One said to the monks: "Imagine a guest house where all kinds of people stay—warriors, priests, elders, householders, hunters, the disciplined and the undisciplined, laypeople and monastics alike all lodge there. This body is likewise a place where many kinds of feelings take residence—painful feelings, pleasant feelings, and feelings that are neither painful nor pleasant. There are bodily feelings of pleasure, bodily feelings of pain, and bodily feelings of neither pleasure nor pain. There are mental feelings of pleasure, mental feelings of pain, and mental feelings of neither pleasure nor pain. There are feelings born of sensory craving that are pleasant, painful, or neither. There are feelings free from sensory craving that are pleasant, painful, or neither. There are feelings tied to attachment that are pleasant, painful, or neither. And there are feelings of true liberation that are pleasant, painful, or neither."

> Like travelers staying at an inn, All kinds of people come and go— Warriors, priests, elders, householders, Even outcasts and forest dwellers, Those who keep precepts and those who break them, Monks and laypeople alike. So too with this body— All kinds of feelings arise: Pleasant, painful, or neutral, With craving or without, Clinging or letting go. A monk strives with diligence, With clear wisdom, unwavering. He understands all feelings fully, And seeing them as they truly are, He ends all defilements in this very life. When the body dies, he's no longer counted, Dwelling forever in perfect peace.

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
