> Chapter 495

> Thus have I heard:

> At one time, the Buddha was residing at the Bamboo Grove near Rajagaha, in the place called Kalandaka. At that time, the Venerable Shariputra was staying on Vulture Peak Mountain.

> At that time, the Venerable Shariputra addressed the monks, saying: "One who violates the precepts, because of their broken precepts, loses their footing and the mind finds no joy in dwelling; without joy in dwelling, one loses joy, tranquility, bliss, stillness of concentration, true insight, disenchantment, dispassion, and liberation—and having lost liberation, one can never attain final Nirvana. Just as when a tree's roots are damaged, its branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits cannot fully develop—so too is a monk who breaks the precepts. Merit degenerates, the mind finds no joy in dwelling, and having lost faith and joy, one loses joy, tranquility, bliss, stillness of concentration, true insight, disenchantment, dispassion, and liberation—and having lost liberation, one can never attain final Nirvana."

> A monk who upholds moral discipline has a solid foundation and proper support, and his mind finds faith and joy. With faith and joy, his mind becomes glad, at ease, and peaceful, settling into deep concentration. With that stillness, he sees things as they truly are, turns away from craving, lets go of desire, and attains liberation. Once liberated, he swiftly reaches complete Nirvana, with nothing left remaining. Just as a tree with unbroken roots will fully grow its branches, leaves, flowers, and fruit, so too does a monk of moral discipline. With his foundation intact and his support secure, his mind finds faith and joy. From that faith and joy come gladness, ease, peace, stillness, deep concentration, true seeing, turning away, letting go, and liberation—and he quickly attains complete Nirvana.

> When the Venerable Shariputra had spoken this sutra, all the monks, having heard his words, rejoiced and faithfully put them into practice.
