> Chapter 535

> Thus I have heard:

> Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of the Benefactor of the Orphans, near the city of Shravasti. At that time, the Venerable Aniruddha was residing in the Pine Forest Monastery. Meanwhile, the Venerable Mahamaudgalyayana was dwelling in the country of the Vajjis, on the mountain called Shrimala, in the dense, frightening forest where wild beasts roamed.

> Then the Venerable Anuruddha, while alone in a quiet place, engaged in deep contemplation and thought: "There is a single path that purifies beings, frees them from sorrow, lamentation, pain, and distress, and leads to the realization of true reality—namely, the Four Foundations of Mindfulness. What are the four? Contemplating the body as the body, contemplating feelings as feelings, contemplating the mind as the mind, and contemplating phenomena as phenomena. If one distances oneself from the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, one distances oneself from the noble teachings; distancing from the noble teachings, one distances from the noble path; distancing from the noble path, one distances from the nectar of liberation; distancing from the nectar of liberation, one cannot escape birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and distress. If one finds joy and confidence in the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, one finds joy and confidence in the noble teachings; joy in the noble teachings leads to joy in the noble path; joy in the noble path leads to joy in the nectar of liberation; joy in the nectar of liberation enables one to escape birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and distress."

> At that time, the Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, knowing what was in the mind of the Venerable Aniruddha, just as a strong man might extend or bend his arm, disappeared from the terrifying dense forest abounding with beasts on Crocodile Hill in the Vajji country, and appeared before the Venerable Aniruddha at the Pine Grove Monastery in Sāvatthī. He said to Aniruddha: "While dwelling alone in a quiet place, you were absorbed in meditation and had this thought: 'There is a single path that purifies beings, liberating them from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and distress, and that leads to the attainment of the truth of suchness — namely, the Four Establishments of Mindfulness. What are the four? Contemplating the body as the body; contemplating feelings as feelings, the mind as the mind, and phenomena as phenomena. If one takes no delight in the Four Establishments of Mindfulness, one takes no delight in the noble Dharma; if one takes no delight in the noble Dharma, one takes no delight in the noble path; if one takes no delight in the noble path, one takes no delight in the ambrosial Dharma; if one takes no delight in the ambrosial Dharma, then one cannot be liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and distress. But if one has faith and delight in the Four Establishments of Mindfulness, one delights in the noble Dharma; delighting in the noble Dharma, one delights in the noble path; delighting in the noble path, one attains the ambrosial Dharma; attaining the ambrosial Dharma, one is liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and distress.' Is that so?"

> Venerable Anuruddha said to Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, "Indeed, indeed, Venerable."

> The Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to the Venerable Aniruddha, "What is meant by 'delighting in the four establishments of mindfulness'?"

> Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said: "If a monk contemplates the body as the body, with mindfulness settled on the body, taming, calming, and stilling the mind, and advancing with single-pointed focus—then likewise, contemplating feelings, mind, and phenomena, with mindfulness settled, taming, calming, and stilling, and advancing with single-pointed focus—this, Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, is called a monk delighting in the four foundations of mindfulness."

> At that time, the Venerable Mahamaudgalyayana, entering into a meditative absorption according to his nature, departed from the Pine Forest Monastery in Shravasti and returned to the fearsome, dense grove of wild beasts on Mount Shrīsmara in the Vajji village.
