> (538)

> Thus have I heard:

> At one time, the Buddha was staying at Jetavana, Anathapindika's Grove, in the kingdom of Shravasti. Also staying in Shravasti were the venerable Shariputra, the venerable Maudgalyayana, the venerable Ananda, and the venerable Aniruddha.

> At that time, Venerable Maudgalyayana went to where Venerable Aniruddha was. After exchanging greetings and polite inquiries, he sat down to one side. Then Venerable Maudgalyayana asked Venerable Aniruddha: "By cultivating and frequently cultivating which merit does one attain this great spiritual power?"

> The venerable Aniruddha said to the venerable Maudgalyayana: "It is through cultivating and repeatedly cultivating the four foundations of mindfulness that I have attained this great power. What are the four? Here, one dwells contemplating the body as body internally—ardent, clearly knowing, and mindful, having removed covetousness and grief toward the world. One dwells contemplating the body as body externally, and both internally and externally. One dwells contemplating feelings as feelings internally, externally, and both internally and externally. One dwells contemplating the mind as mind internally, externally, and both internally and externally. One dwells contemplating phenomena as phenomena internally, externally, and both internally and externally—ardent, clearly knowing, and mindful, having removed covetousness and grief toward the world. This is called cultivating and repeatedly cultivating the four foundations of mindfulness. Through this, I have attained this great power: with little effort I can observe a thousand Mount Sumerus, just as a person with clear eyes standing atop a high mountain gazes down at a thousand groves of palm trees below. Thus, through cultivating and repeatedly cultivating the four foundations of mindfulness, I have attained this great power, and with little effort I see a thousand Mount Sumerus. So it is, venerable Maudgalyayana! It is through cultivating and repeatedly cultivating the four foundations of mindfulness that I have attained this great power."
