> (No translation needed - this appears to be a numbering or catalog reference, not a section heading)

> Thus I have heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

> At that time, the venerable Ananda, having put on his robe and taken his alms bowl in the early morning, entered the city of Śrāvastī to beg for alms. While on the road, he thought, "I will first go to the nunnery." So he proceeded directly to the nunnery.

> The bhikkhunis, seeing the Venerable Ananda approaching from afar, quickly prepared a seat and invited him to sit.

> Then the Bhikkhunis paid homage to the Venerable Ananda by bowing at his feet, and then withdrew to sit to one side. They said to the Venerable Ananda, "We Bhikkhunis, having practiced the Four Foundations of Mindfulness with a focused mind, have come to know for ourselves our progress along the path."

> "Excellent, excellent, sisters," said Venerable Ananda to the nuns. "You should practice as you have spoken. Those who cultivate the Four Foundations of Mindfulness and have well-established their minds should understand the rising and falling of phenomena in this way."

> Then the Venerable Ananda gave a variety of teachings to the nuns. After delivering these teachings, he rose from his seat and departed.

> At that time, the Venerable Ananda, having returned from his alms round in the city of Shravasti, put away his robes and bowl, washed his feet, and approached the World-Honored One. He bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, stepped back, and sat to one side. He then told the World-Honored One everything that the nuns had said.

> The Buddha told Ananda, "Excellent! Excellent! One should learn to practice the Four Foundations of Mindfulness in this way—skillfully keeping the mind settled, and clearly understanding its rising and falling, forward and backward. Why is this? Because the mind seeks outwardly, and then one must restrain it and investigate the mind itself. Whether the mind is scattered or untransformed, one knows it as it truly is. If a monk dwells contemplating the body as a body, and while contemplating the body as a body, the body becomes drowsy and the mind grows lax in its efforts, that monk should arouse a clear confidence and take up a sign of purity. Having aroused clear confidence and recollected the sign of purity, his mind becomes joyful; from joy arises delight; his mind being delighted, the body becomes tranquil; the body being tranquil, he experiences bodily ease; experiencing bodily ease, his mind becomes concentrated. When the mind is concentrated, the noble disciple should learn thus: 'Regarding this matter, I shall take the outwardly scattered mind and gather it to rest—neither arousing thoughts of intention nor of contemplation, without thought or contemplation, dwelling in equanimity and ease. Dwelling thus at ease, I know it as it truly is.' The same is taught regarding feelings, the mind, and mental phenomena as well."

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, the Venerable Ananda heard his words and, with joy, put them into practice.
