> Chapter 616

> Thus I have heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "You should take up the inner mark of the mind and not let it scatter outward. Why is that? If a monk is foolish, undiscerning, and unskillful—not taking up the inner mark of the mind but grasping at external marks—he will then decline and create obstacles for himself. It is like a cook who is foolish, undiscerning, and unskillful, unable to skillfully blend various flavors when preparing food for his master. The sour, salty, bitter, and bland tastes do not suit the master’s preference. He cannot grasp what the master enjoys—the harmony of sour, salty, bitter, and bland flavors. He cannot attend closely to the master, discerning his needs and listening to his desires, skillfully understanding the master’s mind. Instead, he follows his own ideas in blending the flavors to serve the master. If the food does not suit the master’s taste, the master is displeased. Because of this displeasure, the cook receives no reward or favor, nor is he cherished. In the same way, a foolish monk—undiscerning and unskillful—dwells in contemplating the body within the body, yet cannot cut off above-the-surface afflictions. He cannot collect his mind, cannot attain inner tranquility, cannot attain excellent right mindfulness and right discernment, and cannot attain the four kinds of higher mental states, abiding happily in the present life, or the previously unattained peaceful Nirvana. This is called a foolish, undiscerning, and unskillful monk—one who cannot skillfully collect the inner mark of the mind but grasps at external marks, creating obstacles for himself.

> "If there is a monk who is clever, eloquent, and skilled in expedient means, first he masters the inner mind, then he observes external appearances. In the end, he will never backslide or create obstacles for himself. It is like a skilled cook who is clever, eloquent, and good at adapting. He serves a noble master and is able to blend various flavors—sour, salty, bitter, and bland. He carefully notes the master's preferences, then mixes the ingredients to suit his taste. He offers the master the dishes he desires, again and again. Once the master is pleased, the cook will gain rank and rewards, receiving greater affection and regard. Thus, a clever cook knows how to win the master's heart. In the same way, a monk abides in contemplation of the body as the body, cutting off afflictions above. He skillfully controls his mind, achieving inner stillness, with right mindfulness and right awareness. He attains the four higher states of mind, experiences joyful dwelling in the present life, and realizes the still, secure Nirvana that he had not yet attained. This is what is meant by a monk who is clever, eloquent, and skilled in expedient means: he masters the inner mark and holds onto external appearances, never backsliding or creating obstacles for himself. The same applies to the contemplations of feeling, mind, and phenomena."

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
