> Chapter 619

> Thus have I heard:

> At one time, the Buddha was traveling through the land of Kosala, and arrived at the forest of身恕 (Sīsapā) to the north of the village of私伽陀 (Sāketa).

> Thus I have heard. At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "In the past, there was a pole acrobat who balanced a pole on his shoulder and said to his disciple, 'You watch over and protect me from above and below on the pole, and I will also protect you. Supporting each other this way, we can perform and play, and earn much wealth.' The disciple then said to the acrobat, 'That is not as you say. Instead, we should each protect ourselves. Performing and playing this way, we can earn much wealth, and our bodies can descend safely and without harm.' The acrobat replied, 'As you say, each should protect oneself, but this meaning is also as I have said: when one protects oneself, that is also protecting others; when others protect themselves, that is also protecting oneself. The mind, drawing close to itself, cultivates and follows this protection, realizing it in practice—this is called protecting oneself and protecting others. What is protecting others by protecting oneself? Not frightening others, not opposing others, not harming others, and having a compassionate mind toward them—this is called protecting others by protecting oneself.' Therefore, monks, you should learn thus. One who protects oneself cultivates the four foundations of mindfulness, and one who protects others also cultivates the four foundations of mindfulness."

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
