> Chapter 620

> Thus have I heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Bamboo Grove of Kalandaka, near Rajagaha.

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "In the great snowy mountains, there are places of freezing ice and dangerous cliffs where even monkeys do not dwell, let alone humans. There are other mountains where monkeys live but no humans are found. And there are mountains where both humans and animals coexist. In places where monkeys roam, hunters smear sticky glue on the grass. A clever monkey will keep its distance and escape, but a foolish monkey, unable to stay away, touches the grass lightly with its hand and gets stuck. Then, using its other hand to try to free itself, both hands become glued. It tries to use its feet to break free, and they too become glued. It tries to bite the grass with its mouth, and its mouth is glued as well. With all five parts stuck fast, it curls up and falls to the ground. When the hunter arrives, he pierces it with a stick and carries it away."

> Monks, you should know this: a foolish monkey leaves its own territory, its parents' dwelling place, and wanders into another's territory, bringing this suffering upon itself. Likewise, monks, a foolish ordinary person dwells near a village. In the morning, wearing robes and carrying a bowl, they enter the village to beg for food—but they do not properly protect their body, nor guard their sense faculties. Seeing forms with the eyes, they become attached; with sounds, smells, tastes, and touches, they also become attached. A foolish monk, once his inner senses and outer objects are bound by these five fetters, falls under the control of Māra. Therefore, monks, you should train yourselves thus: abide in your own domain, in the dwelling place of your parents, and do not follow other territories or other domains. What, monks, is the monk's own domain, the parents' dwelling place? It is the four establishments of mindfulness—contemplating the body as the body, dwelling with awareness; contemplating feelings, mind, and phenomena as they are, dwelling with awareness.
