> Chapter 623

> Thus have I heard:

> Once, the Buddha was staying at the Deer Park in Varanasi, near the place where the sages resided.

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks, saying: "In the world, it is said that there is beautiful appearance. Can this worldly beauty cause many people to gather and gaze upon it?"

> The monks replied to the Buddha, "Yes, World-Honored One."

> The Buddha said to the monks, "Suppose there were a beautiful sight in the world—the most beautiful sight—and it were accompanied by various kinds of music, singing, and dancing, drawing a great crowd of people to gather and watch. What do you think? Would those people be captivated by it?"

> The monk replied to the Buddha, "Yes, World-Honored One!"

> A monk said to the Buddha: "No, World-Honored One. Why? Because that man, seeing a swordsman following behind him, would constantly think: 'If I spill even a single drop of oil, the swordsman will cut off my head.' With a focused mind, he would carry the bowl of oil steadily, walking slowly through the crowd midst attractive sights, without daring to glance aside."

> "Thus, monks, if there are ascetics or brahmins who maintain proper posture with dignity, focus their minds, disregard sensory distractions, well restrain all mental activities, and abide in mindfulness of the body—such ones are my disciples, following my teaching. What does it mean for a monk to maintain proper posture with dignity, focus the mind, disregard sensory distractions, restrain all mental activities, and abide in mindfulness of the body? Thus, monks, one contemplates the body as the body, striving with diligence, with clear understanding and right mindfulness, overcoming craving and distress regarding the world. Contemplating feelings as feelings, mind as mind, and phenomena as phenomena, one abides in the same manner. This is called a monk maintaining proper posture with dignity, focusing the mind, disregarding sensory distractions, well restraining mental activities, and abiding in the Four Establishments of Mindfulness."

> At that moment, the World-Honored One spoke this verse:

> With focused mindfulness, Guard the bowl of oil, Protect your own mind— Never stray to other places. What is exceedingly hard to pass Is the supreme and subtle dharma— The sharp sword of the Buddha's teaching. Unite your mind, Uphold it with steadfast care. This is not the work of ordinary folk, Who dwell in negligence. Only thus can one enter The teaching of vigilance.

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
