如是我聞：

> Thus have I heard:

一時，佛住舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

爾時，世尊告諸比丘……如上說。差別者：「聖弟子成就此四力者，當作是學。我不畏不活，我何緣畏不活？若身行不淨行、口不淨行、意不淨行，作諸邪貪，不信、懈怠、不精進、失念、不定、惡慧、慳、不攝者，彼應畏不活。我有四力，謂覺力、精進力、無罪力、攝力，有此四力成就故，不應畏如不活畏。如是惡名畏、眾中畏、死畏、惡趣畏亦如上說。」

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks... as described above. The difference is: "A noble disciple who accomplishes these four powers should train themselves thus: 'I do not fear lack of livelihood. Why should I fear lack of livelihood? If one engages in impure conduct of body, speech, and mind, indulges in wrongful cravings, lacks faith, is lazy, does not exert effort, loses mindfulness, is distracted, has unwise understanding, is stingy, and does not restrain oneself—that person should indeed fear lack of livelihood. But I possess four powers: the power of awareness, the power of effort, the power of blamelessness, and the power of restraint. Because I have accomplished these four powers, I should not fear lack of livelihood as others do.' Likewise with fear of bad reputation, fear in assemblies, fear of death, and fear of unfavorable rebirths—all as described above."

佛說此經已，諸比丘聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
