> Chapter 717

> Thus have I heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "Among external factors, I do not see any single factor that, when it arises, gives rise to unarisen unwholesome states and causes already arisen ones to increase and expand, and that prevents unarisen wholesome states from arising and causes already arisen ones to decline—like bad friends and bad companions. One who has bad friends and bad companions gives rise to unarisen greed, and causes already arisen greed to increase and expand. Unarisen aversion, drowsiness, restlessness, regret, and doubt arise, and already arisen ones increase and expand. Unarisen factors of mindfulness are prevented from arising, and already arisen ones decline. Unarisen factors of investigation, diligence, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity are prevented from arising, and already arisen ones decline."

> "Monks, I see no other single factor that so effectively prevents unwholesome states from arising, cuts off those already arisen, brings forth wholesome states not yet arisen, and expands those already arisen, as noble friendship, noble companionship, and noble association. With a noble friend, noble companion, and noble associate, the hindrance of sensual desire that has not arisen does not arise, and the one that has arisen is abandoned. Likewise for the hindrances of ill-will, sloth and torpor, restlessness and remorse, and doubt. Furthermore, the awakening factor of mindfulness that has not arisen comes to arise, and the one that has arisen is developed to fullness. So too for the awakening factors of investigation of phenomena, diligence, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity—each arises where it had not, and once arisen, is cultivated to its complete fulfillment."

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
