> Thus have I heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

> At that time, the monk Kama approached the Buddha, bowed at his feet, and sat to one side, saying: "World-Honored One, what is called desire? What is desire?"

> The Buddha said to Kama: "Desire refers to the pleasures of the five senses. What are these five? The eye perceives forms that are attractive, pleasant, and memorable, nurturing desire and delight. Likewise, the ear, nose, tongue, and body perceive sounds, scents, tastes, and sensations that are attractive, pleasant, and memorable, nurturing desire and delight. This is what is called desire. However, those sensory experiences themselves are not desire—it is the clinging attachment to them that is desire."

> At that moment, the World-Honored One spoke this verse:

> "The world is filled with all sorts of colors, Yet these are not the cravings of desire. It is the thoughts of greed and longing That are a person's true desire. The many forms remain in the world, But the practitioner cuts off the cravings of the mind."

> Bhikkhu Kāma said to the Buddha: "Venerable Sir, is there a path or a way to cut off this craving and desire?"

> The Buddha told the monks, "There is a Noble Eightfold Path that can cut off craving and desire: Right Understanding, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration."

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, the monk Kama heard the Buddha’s words, rejoiced, and faithfully put them into practice.
