> Chapter 803

> Thus I have heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

> At that time, the World-Honored One told the monks: "Practice mindfulness of breathing. If a monk practices mindfulness of breathing and cultivates it repeatedly, he attains stillness of body and mind, with awareness and reflection, peaceful cessation, singleness of mind, and fulfills the cultivation of clear perception. What is the practice of mindfulness of breathing that, when repeatedly cultivated, brings about stillness of body and mind, awareness and reflection, peaceful cessation, singleness of mind, and fulfills the cultivation of clear perception? A monk, whether dwelling in a village or town, in the morning dresses and takes his bowl, enters the village for alms, carefully protecting his body, guarding his sense faculties, and firmly anchoring his mind. After receiving alms, he returns to his dwelling, puts away his robe and bowl, washes his feet, and then goes to the forest, an empty room, under a tree, or an open airy space. He sits upright with body straight, fixing his attention before him. He abandons worldly greed, cleanses himself of desire, and cuts off anger, drowsiness, restlessness, and doubt. He transcends all perplexity and gains resolute confidence in wholesome qualities. He distances himself from the five hindrances that weaken wisdom and obstruct the path to nirvana. He minds the in-breath, training himself in mindful attention. He minds the out-breath, training himself in mindful attention. Whether the breath is long or short, he fully perceives the entire body with each in-breath and trains himself accordingly; he fully perceives the entire body with each out-breath and trains himself accordingly. He perceives the calming of all bodily formations with each in-breath and trains himself accordingly; he perceives the calming of all bodily formations with each out-breath and trains himself accordingly. He perceives joy, perceives happiness, perceives mental activity, and perceives the calming of mental activity with each in-breath, training himself accordingly; he perceives the calming of mental activity with each out-breath, training himself accordingly. He perceives the mind, perceives the mind's gladness, perceives the mind's collectedness, and perceives the mind's release with each in-breath, training himself accordingly; he perceives the mind's release with each out-breath, training himself accordingly. He observes impermanence, observes letting go, observes desirelessness, and observes cessation with each in-breath, training himself accordingly; he observes cessation with each out-breath, training himself accordingly. This is called the practice of mindfulness of breathing—stillness of body, stillness of mind, with awareness and reflection, peaceful cessation, singleness of mind, and the fulfillment of the cultivation of clear perception."

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
