> Chapter 806

> Thus have I heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

> At that time, the World-Honored One, in the early morning, dressed and took his bowl, entering the city of Shravasti to beg for alms. After eating, he returned to the monastery, put away his robe and bowl, washed his feet, and taking his sitting cloth, entered the Andha Forest. He sat beneath a tree, engaging in daytime meditation.

> At that time, the Venerable Kappina, in the early morning, put on his robes, took his bowl, and entered the city of Sāvatthī to collect almsfood. After returning, he set aside his robes and bowl, washed his feet, took his sitting mat, and entered the Andha Forest. He sat in meditation under a tree, not far from the Buddha, with his body upright and still, his mind and body straight and poised, engaged in profound contemplation.

> At that time, many monks, having arisen from their meditation in the afternoon, went to where the Buddha was. They paid homage by prostrating at his feet and then sat down to one side.

> The monks said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, we have often seen that venerable one sitting upright, well-composed in body, not leaning or moving, with a focused and sublime mind."

> The Buddha told the monks: "If a monk relies on a village for support, in the morning he puts on his robe, takes his bowl, and enters the village to beg for food. After returning to the monastery, he puts away his robe and bowl, washes his feet, and then enters the forest or sits in a quiet room or in the open air. He reflects with focused mindfulness, until he observes and learns well how to still his thoughts. This is called meditative concentration. If a monk sits upright in contemplation, with body and mind unmoving, he dwells in a state of sublime peace."

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.
