Samyukta Āgama (雜阿含經)

Chapter 827

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was residing in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in the city of Shravasti.

At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks, saying: "Consider a farmer who skillfully tends his field in three ways, each in its proper season. What are the three? That farmer plows and harrows in season, irrigates in season, and sows the seeds in season. Having done this—plowing, irrigating, and sowing in their proper time—the farmer does not think: 'Let the crops sprout today, bear fruit today, and ripen today, or tomorrow, or the day after.' Monks, though the farmer does not think, 'Let them sprout, fruit, and ripen today, tomorrow, or the next day,' once the seeds are in the earth, they grow, bear fruit, and ripen naturally, each in its own time.

"In the same way, monks, you should skillfully cultivate these three trainings in their proper season: the training in higher virtue, the training in higher mind, and the training in higher wisdom. Having cultivated them, do not think: 'May I today—or tomorrow, or the day after—become free from the taints, with my mind well liberated.' Do not think: 'By some natural power, may I today, tomorrow, or the next day become free from the taints, with my mind well liberated.' Rather, when you have cultivated the training in higher virtue, higher mind, and higher wisdom in due season, then in that very time, you will naturally attain freedom from the taints and the liberation of the mind."

"Consider, bhikkhu, a hen sitting on her eggs—ten or twelve of them—keeping them warm, caring for them, and tending to them properly. The hen does not think: 'Today, or tomorrow, or the day after, I will peck with my beak or scratch with my claws so that my chicks may safely hatch.' Yet because she sits on them well, caring for them and tending to them at the right time, the chicks naturally and safely break out of their shells.

In the same way, bhikkhu, when you diligently cultivate the three trainings, in due time you will naturally put an end to the outflows and attain liberation of mind."

When the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, the monks who heard his teaching rejoiced and resolved to put it into practice.
