> (879)

> Thus have I heard:

> Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park, in Śrāvastī.

> At that time, the World-Honored One told the monks, "There are four right efforts. What are the four? The first is the effort to abandon, the second is the effort to restrain, the third is the effort to protect, and the fourth is the effort to cultivate. What is the effort to abandon? If a monk, when evil unwholesome states have already arisen, seeks to abandon them, generating desire, making effort, striving diligently, and upholding the practice; when evil unwholesome states have not yet arisen, seeks to prevent them from arising, generating desire, making effort, striving diligently, and upholding the practice; when wholesome states have not yet arisen, seeks to bring them forth, generating desire, making effort, striving diligently, and upholding the practice; and when wholesome states have already arisen, seeks to increase and cultivate them, generating desire, making effort, striving diligently, and upholding the practice — this is called the effort to abandon. What is the effort to restrain? If a monk carefully guards the eye faculty, concealing it, taming it, and progressing toward its mastery; likewise, he carefully guards the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind faculties, concealing them, taming them, and progressing toward their mastery — this is called the effort to restrain. What is the effort to protect? If a monk carefully upholds and guards the true signs of meditative concentration, namely the signs of the blue-black discoloration, the swelling, the festering, the decaying, and the partially eaten, cultivating and guarding them without letting them fade away — this is called the effort to protect. What is the effort to cultivate? If a monk cultivates the four foundations of mindfulness and so forth — this is called the effort to cultivate."

> At that moment, the World-Honored One spoke this verse:

> "Four types of right effort— The restraint of what is unwholesome, The guarding of what is wholesome, And the cultivation of the good— These the Awakened One proclaimed. A monk who strives diligently Thus destroys all defilements."

> After the Buddha had spoken this sutra, all the bhikkhus rejoiced in his words and faithfully put them into practice.

> Just as with the Four Establishments of Mindfulness, so too should it be understood for the Four Right Efforts, the Four Bases of Spiritual Power, the Five Faculties, the Five Powers, the Seven Factors of Awakening, the Eightfold Path, the Four Paths, the Four Dharma Sayings, and the cultivation of Right Insight—all are explained in the same way.
